PPB Atma Jaya is opening a new class in Legal Drafting Course, which is scheduled to start on Saturday, 2 April 2011.
This course is especially intended for lawyers, notaries, legal officers, law students as well as secretaries.

Class Period : 2 April – 11 June 2011 (11 sessions)
Course Time : Saturday – 9:00 -12:00 (3 hrs)

Drafting is an essential experience to prepare you to the practice of law. To that end, the Legal Drafting Course at PPB Atma Jaya is designed to provide you with the guidelines on drafting with regard for style, accuracy and readability as well as practice and feedback. This involves gaining mastery of rendering Indonesian legal terminologies into English as well as applying language skills in authentic writing. The course should also substantially reinforce and refine the writing skills that you have developed in the course of your day-to-day drafting tasks at your office.
The ultimate goal of the course is to get you ready to undertake drafting tasks demanded of lawyers. Specifically, the course should help you do the following:
- Approach drafting tasks (contracts, letters of attorney, letters, emails, etc.) with confidence.
- Choose language strategically : Understanding standard and common legal phrases
- Improve grammatical and semantic accuracy.
- Write clearly, concisely, and without inadvertent ambiguity.
- Draft documents with readable structure and style.
- Learn how to describe or translate Indonesian legal terminologies into English.

One-day workshop TRANSLATING & INTERPRETING SKILLS For Advocates, Notaries, and Legal Officers

In this workshop, Evand Halim, an authority on English for Law and an examiner of the Translator’s Qualifying Exam (UKP), will address some critical issues of legal translation and will point out common pitfalls in translating legal documents. He will provide you with the key principles of translating legal documents and some powerful techniques that will help you become a better legal translator. During the workshop, Evand will also discuss the issue of lexical accuracy (correct choice of words- the best word to use among related or seemingly identical terms or words) and grammatical accuracy, as well as some techniques for translating legal terminologies that may have no absolute functional equivalents (such as wakaf, hibah, harta warisan, harta wasiat, consequential damages, liquidated damages). Besides, he will also touch on the issues of styles in legal translation: the traditional style (the legalese) and the plain English.
In addition to the legal translation, you will also be introduced to legal interpreting. Margaretha M. Adisoemarta will provide you with the basic principles and knowledge of interpreting (penerjemahan lisan) in general and legal interpreting in particular. Various modes of interpreting such as sight translation, dialog, consecutive and simultaneous interpreting will be introduced through a brief presentation and practice sessions. Some problems and strategies will also be highlighted to provide you with the opportunity to further develop your interpreting skill.

About Evand Halim
Evand Halim teaches translation in the Graduate School of Applied English Linguistics at Atma Jaya Catholic University. He holds a certificate in Teaching English for Law from Nashville State Community College (Sponsored by the Office of English Language Programs, U.S. Department of State). He has been providing trainings (English for Law, Legal Drafting, and Legal Translation courses) at PPB Atma jaya, LBI Universitas Indonesia, and in the legal departments of some companies such as PT. BCA Tbk, PT Bank Mizuho Indonesia, PT Bank OCBC NISP, and officers from other leading companies, agencies, and law firms such as Ministry of State Secretary, Ministry of Trade, Roosdiono and Partners, USAID, PT. Bank Sumitomo Mitsui Indonesia, PT Holcim Indonesia, Conocco Phillips, Exxon Mobil, O.C. Kaligis & Associates, Hotman Paris & Associates, Hadinoto Hadi Putranto and Partners, and others.
About Margaretha M. Adisoemarta
Margaretha M. Adisoemarta is currently working on her Master’s thesis in the Linguistics department of the Faculty of Humanities (FIB) at the University of Indonesia. She is Manager of Translation and Interpreting program at Lembaga Bahasa Internasional (LBI), Faculty of Humanities, University of Indonesia. In 1999, she started her career as a translator and interpreter, with the Asian Development Bank and the World Bank among her first clients. Since then, for about 11 years now, she has been providing various interpreting services to a range of international as well as Indonesian governmental and non-governmental agencies, such as the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), the National Police (Polri) and the Attorney General Office (Kejagung). Besides, Margaretha has developed and also teaches the Interpreting Course at LBI UI.
